Should We Sell In May And Go Away?

To know the direction of the market of the month, we just need to study the first week’s US economic reports, which have been guiding our predictions of the market direction. Last week, we mentioned that we were concerned of the employment report coming out this week. On Wednesday, the US ADP employment report was released. It was below expectation as predicted. However, the main reason why May’s employment result should not be good is because the weekly jobless claims reports have been below expectations throughout April.

Also, the Straits Times Index (STI) could not climb past the 3,000 hurdle. It has been a frustrating month so far. So what is the major reason for the recent weakness in the US Market?

The Market Selloff These Few Days Might Be A Mistake

The Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased by 184 points these two days. On Wednesday, the Dow dropped by 170 points at one point during the day while the Straits Times Index (STI) got back to below 3,000 again after touching the resistance at 3,035. This has been the scenario for the last two months as the STI fails to hold firmly above 3,000 points. We have mentioned at the start of March that we expect the market to be trading sideways for March, which has proven to be the case.

STI Hovers Aimlessly Between 2,910 And 3,030

At the beginning of the month, we have mentioned that it is not easy to trade in March. Based on our research on the economical reports released in US this month, we found that enterprise reports generally miss the forecast. The miss in figures by all housing reports last week did not help the market. Hence, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was seen falling in four out of five trading sessions last week.

US ADP Employment Report Saves The Market From Free-Falling

As mentioned in my last article, the employment report on Wednesday and Friday is of upmost importance. Whether the market would fall hard depends on employment reports this week. You may find it amazing that on Tuesday, we focused so much on the negative issues like China’s slowdown, Potential Israel Iran missile war, Greek debt problems all of which put a dampener on markets in Asia, Europe and the US. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (Dow) decreased by 204 points on Tuesday, the largest drop this year.

A Second Try For STI To Stand Above 3000, What Is Needed Now?

In our last article, we mentioned that the Straits Times Index (STI) has a chance of rising to 3,100 if it stands above 3,000 for 3 consecutive days. It didn’t. In fact it dropped below 3,000 on the third day. Last week we saw the STI deviated from Dow Jones Industrial Average’s (DJIA) movement because of a slew of earnings miss by some big companies like Genting Singapore, Wilmar International and Neptune Orient Lines. These companies suffered a gap down on the open. In fact, for some of us, we saw our profits vanished in one day.

Will STI Stand Above 3000 Firmly With Greece Problems Out Of The Way?

In my last article, I mentioned that for the STI to break through the 3000 points barrier, and for Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) to stand above 12,938 points, we need help from Greece and a good Economical Report. Last Tuesday, US’ retail sales report did not help lift the DJIA, as the released figures were below expectation. However the “lift” came on Thursday night with a terrific Jobless Claims report that is at a 4 year low.

Can The STI And DOW Break Their Resistances This Week?

Asia’s Leading Investment Guru, Mr Hu Li Yang is correct in anticipating the resistance for the Dow at 12,938 and the resistance for the Straits Times Index (STI) at 3,000. On 9 February, the Dow hits 12,924 before retreating to end at 12,801 on Friday, 10 February. Similarly, the STI hits 2,992 points before retreating to end at 2,960 on Friday. These shows the resistances are strong at 12,938 for Dow and 3,000 for STI.

As predicted accurately by Asia’s Leading Investment Guru, Hu Li Yang, the Straits Times Index (STI) has travelled from a Box Bottom of 2,640 to Box Top 2,900. However, 3,000 seem to be a strong hurdle for the STI now. These few days, the STI has been hovering around 2,900. Take note that the STI has a series of resistances in the region of 2,900 to 3,000 while the Dow’s resistance is between 12,700 and 12,900. (Please see our chart on the STI below.)
