Scientex Expands Packaging Segment
Malaysia Daily Bulletin | 06 August 2015
  • Scientex is set to expand its consumer and industrial packaging division, after announcing that its unit, Scientex Packaging Film, had signed an agreement to acquire plastic packaging player Mondi Ipoh (MI) for RM58 million cash.
  • MI operates two manufacturing plants in Ipoh with total production capacity of 16,800 tonnes per year and is expected to increase the group’s consumer packaging production capacity by about 30 percent to 76,800 tonnes per annum.
  • Approximately 70 percent of MI’s revenue comprises exports to Asia-Pacific, thus, the acquisition will give Scientex a larger market share in the regional packaging industry.

Significance: Scientex will benefit from the increased production capacity of its downstream consumer packaging products, particularly functional films, allowing it to diversify its packaging product range as well as serve a broader set of requirements from new and existing clientele.
