The Straits Times Index (STI) closed down 23.69 points (0.73 percent) at 3,200.18. The market traded on moderate volume of 72 million shares traded with 51 gainers and 322 losers as of 12:12pm.

Notable gainers were Darco Water Tech, St James, Fujian Zhenyun, Cheung Woh and Jasper Investments, with Darco Water Tech leading the pack.

Notable losers were JB Foods R500, Cedar Strategic, JB Foods R, Lereno Bio-Chem and China Yongsheng , with JB Foods R500 leading the pack.

In other alerts, Unionmet (Singapore) registered no revenue for the third quarter ended 31 August as the group’s trading partners were unable to secure financing for their trading lines which were cut due to a credit squeeze which resulted from a metal financing scandal. Consequently, the company has sank further into losses.

Hotel Royal agreed to acquire a 97-room boutique hotel, The Baba House and its business in Melaka, Malaysia for RM26.1 million. The acquisition will allow the group to further grow its operations in Malaysia as well as the potential for capital appreciation as the target hotel is located on prime land from various Melaka’s historical sites and is limited in supply. The acquisition is expected to be financed by both cash and bank borrowings.
