Market action continued to stay volatile with the Dow Jones Industrial Average suffering a 313-point plunge immediately after the US Presidential election, as investors shifted their attention to the US$600 billion in spending cuts and tax increases set to kick in early next year.

Meanwhile, China’s Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose for the first time in three months in October to 50.2 from 49.8 in September. Turn to page 14 for more details. At the same time, China’s services PMI rebounded to 55.5 in October from a two-year low in September on the back of stronger activity in the construction and retail sectors, adding to signs that the world’s second largest economy is regaining momentum.

In our In Focus section, we have featured five REIT plays, namely Ascendas REIT, CapitaMall Trust, CapitaRetail China Trust, Hutchison Port Holdings Trust and MapleTree Logistics Trust. In the past one year, REITs have experienced a strong price-surge due to their attractive high dividend yield as well as the strong Singapore dollar. This led many investors to question if it is time to take profit. Turn to page 56 to read about what analysts said.

With the third quarter reporting season proving to be a bumpy one as a handful of blue chip stocks made gloomy earnings forecasts, do invest with care.
