Noble In Talks To Hire Ex-Goldman’s Alireza As CEO, WSJ Reports
Bloomberg Top News | 18 November 2011

Noble Group is in talks to hire former Goldman Sachs Group Inc. Asia-Pacific co-president Yusuf Alireza as chief executive officer (CEO), the Wall Street Journal said, citing an unidentified person familiar with the matter.

Noble has been trying to hire Alireza for some time, the newspaper said. Noble founder and chairman Richard Elman has known Alireza for some time, it said.

Noble reported its first quarterly loss in 14 years last week and CEO Ricardo Leiman quit. The Hong Kong-based supplier of energy, food and mining commodities is undertaking a “major review” of its businesses to improve profitability, it said in its earnings statement.

Goldman Sachs said in an internal memo on 11 November that Alireza was leaving the company after 19 years. Alireza, 41, is the most senior departure from Goldman Sachs in the Asia-Pacific region since Ravi Sinha, former co-head of investment banking for Asia ex-Japan, stepped down in April 2010. Alireza was among four Asia-based members of the firm’s global management committee.

Alireza has no plan to join a rival company, said a person with knowledge of the matter who declined to be identified. Goldman promoted him in January to oversee trading operations.

He joined the firm’s fixed-income research group in New York in 1992 and had held positions in fixed-income sales and hedge fund sales, rising to become a partner in 2004, according to the memo. He moved to Hong Kong in 2008 to run the securities division in the Asia-Pacific region.
