    In this issue, we will look at three downtrend stocks.Parkson Holdings has been on a sideways trend since 2009. We can see that from the series of highs at RM6.00 and lows at RM5.00. The 20-day and 40-day Simple Moving Average (SMAs) are also flat to indicate the sideways trend. However, in May 2012, the price broke below the support at RM5.00. We may see the next support at RM4.00. One can consider selling on strength. At that point, the oscillator, Commodity Channel Index (CCI) may also pull back to the overbought level of 100.

    Technical Outlook (STI, Osim, Wilmar)

    From the above, we are looking at the Straits Times Index (STI) on the weekly chart dating from 2009 to 2012. I have drawn the uptrend and downtrend channel. Before August 2011, the STI, in my opinion, was still on an uptrend. However, during August last year, we had a big drop in the market and because of this big drop, my view is that STI will have difficulty making new highs above 3,200.

    This week let’s take a look at United Engineers (UE). UE fell from a high of around $2.80 in January 2011 to a low of $1.70 in December 2011. Since then, it has started to rise again. An uptrend line has been drawn from September 2011 to February 2012. The uptrend channel helps us to determine the higher end of the price channel. In February 2012, UE broke above the price channel. Given the strong momentum of this stock, we may see the stock heading towards the next resistance at around $2.60. One may trade on this momentum and sell near the resistance at $2.60

    DBS Group Holdings (DBS) has broken its $13.50 support and the next support is at $11.50. The 20-day Moving Aaverage (MA) has also crossed below the 40-day MA indicating we may be on a longer term downtrend. On a short term time frame, the stock may be oversold. When the Commodity Channel Index (CCI)(5) goes above +100, it would indicate that the stock is overbought and may pullback. One could take advantage of the rally to sell into strength.

    Telekom Malaysia Bhd is on the uptrend. We can see this by looking at the different moving averages. During the last pullback when the ‘wave’ was down, it gave us good opportunity to buy on dips.

    Technical Outlook (Noble Group, Straits Times Index, Cosco Corp)

    Noble began its run up again after the Global Financial Crisis in October 2008. The rally was pretty strong till it met its resistance at $2.20 in March 2010. This was followed by a 38.2% retracement from the highest resistance line seen on the chart. Support was at the $1.55 region, this support was tested twice in May 2010 and Aug 2010 and $1.55 has proven to be a very strong support. In addition to that, it has broken its short term down trendline (A). One should consider buying on dips when the oscillator, CCI (5) drops below -100.

    Peering Into The Hidden Signals

    Strong resistance (R1) is detected at 0.62 for Golden Agri , the stock has touch 0.62 in mid Jan, mid Apr and recently early Aug. Support is detected at 0.50. This was a previous resistance in May and Jun last year. In the beginning of 2010 the 0.50 level was broken decisively, to reach its next resistance at 0.62.
